Man critical after being pulled from Black Country canal

A man has been left fighting for his life after being pulled from a canal in the Black Country.

Ambulance and air ambulance crews from Cosford were called to the scene near Brades Road and Summerton Road in Oldbury after being alerted to reports of a man in the water.

Paramedics found the man in critical condition on arrival and gave advanced life support before rushing him to City Hospital for further treatment.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 4:24pm to reports of a patient in the water at Summerton Road in Oldbury.

"We currently have the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford, the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care car, the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), one land ambulance and two paramedic officers at the scene.

"On arrival, crews found a man in a critical condition.

"Staff worked quickly to administer advanced life support on scene before conveying him on blue lights and sirens to City Hospital for further treatment."

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We were alerted by ambulance service colleagues to a man being pulled from the canal in Summerton Road, Oldbury, just after 5pm today.

"He is receiving treatment from paramedics."
