Inquest opens after man dies in Oldbury police cell

An inquest has opened into a man who died in police custody.

Christopher David Morgan, aged 38, from Walsall, was found dead in his cell at Oldbury Custody Suite while he was being held for drug possession.

Officers checked on him hourly but found him unresponsive at 2am on September 21, Black Country Coroner's Court heard.

Paramedics were called to the scene but confirmed he was dead.

His cause of death is not yet known.

The incident is also being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Police are struggling to track down Mr Morgan’s family and are appealing for anyone with information to help.

The inquest heard Mr Morgan, born in Stoke-on-Trent, had been arrested for drug possession before he was taken to the custody suite.

He was checked by officers at 12am and 1am, where he seemed well, before being found unresponsive.

Black Country Coroner Mr Zafar Siddique said: “His cause of death is pending.”
