One lane on the southbound carriageway of the popular motorway was shut between junction one for West Bromwich and junction two for Oldbury after the crash, which happened around 7am.

A second crash on the exit slip of the M5 northbound at junction one compounded the problems on the roads.

Not only did the crashes cause long tailbacks in both directions on the M5, it also had a knock-on effect on the M6 and roads in the Black Country.

Delays built on the M6 southbound as drivers struggled to get onto the M5 while it was a similar situation on the Birmingham Road heading to the Birchley Island in Oldbury.

Drivers were stuck in gridlock traffic heading to the roundabout from both the Birmingham and Wolverhampton directions.Traffic from the Wolverhampton side was queuing from the island back towards Burnt Tree junction.

Roads around the Birmingham Road were also affected by the delays.

The crash on the southbound carriageway of the motorway had been cleared by 7.45am but Highways England warned that long delays remained due to the built up congestion.
