Balbir Kaur recruited her 21-year-old son Manvir Singh to attack Samson Masih, aged 37, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

Then the 43-year-old lured the victim to what she hoped would be his death on October 12, it was alleged.

She asked him to visit her flat in Alfred Gunn House, Thompson Road, Oldbury where he arrived shortly before Singh - who had also been invited. It was claimed Kaur told her son: 'Come and kill him.'

The two men left together three minutes later and walked to nearby Primrose Bank where a car containing several men was parked, explained Mr Robert Price, prosecuting.

When Singh grabbed Mr Masih round the neck it was the signal for the others to jump out of the silver VW Passat and ambush the victim, continued the prosecutor.

They were armed with a machete-type weapon, metal bar and knife which caused terrible injuries, breaking one of his legs along with bones in his face and back, the court heard.

He also suffered a fractured skull, bleed on the brain and a deep laceration to the head, said Mr Price who told the jury: "This was a vicious and sustained group attack delivered with lethal weapons.

"Common sense will tell you it is a matter of luck rather than the judgement of those involved that he survived. They were intent on ending his life."

He said the victim was left in an 'acutely precarious state of health' and was detained in hospital for a month. There were 15 separate sites of injury, it was said.

Mr Price continued: "This was a planned and organised attack set up by Balbir Kaur and delivered by her son, his colleague Zaaqir Islaam and other individuals who remain unidentified and wanted by the police."

Kaur and Mr Masih had been going out for several months when 'difficulties and tension' crept into the relationship. "She became jealous and paranoid," concluded the prosecutor.

She told 'wicked lies' to relatives - especially her son - about the alleged treatment she received from Mr Masih. She claimed he had raped her, an allegation not made to police until later, the court heard.

Kaur told officers after her arrest on October 14 that she believed Mr Masih was going to rape her again, called her son and 'told him to come and kill him,' it was claimed. She later alleged this was said in anger and not meant, the jury was told.

Kaur is accused of soliciting murder while her son from Green Lane, Walsall and 20-year-old Islaam of Lime Road, Wednesbury are accused of attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. All the charges are denied and the case continues.
