Fire in blast furnace at Netherton factory

Nearly 20 firefighters tackled a blaze in a blast furnace at a factory in the Black Country.

West Midlands Fire Service was called to the factory unit in Cradley Road, in Netherton, shortly before 9pm on Thursday night.

Crews from Haden Cross, Brierley Hill and Dudley stations attended the fire.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "We were called at 8.59pm on Thursday night to a fire in a blast furnace within a single-storey factory unit on Cradley Road, Netherton.

"The first of our crews arrived in under three minutes. We sent three fire engines and a Brigade Response Vehicle in all, with a total of 18 firefighters.

"Working with on-site staff to access the fire, our crews wore breathing apparatus and used a combination of hose reels and fire extinguishers to put the fire out.

"We left the scene just after 10.20pm."
