The youngsters from Years 5 and 6 attended the event run by the Shapeshifters Sculpture Group.

They were given a masterclass in how to work with wood and stone and encouraged to create their own artworks.

St Andrew's Church in Netherton hosted the classes for the children from Netherton C of E School.

They designed their own artworks and were guided through the creative process so they eventually made their own piece of art.

And to show off the Shapeshifters' stunning work was a wooden carving of a dog's head.

Church co-ordinator Sue Ridley said: "I asked if they could do a workshop for the children to show them what stonemasons do.

"They were taken through the whole design process and they made their own models and came back and painted them.

"After that we had a prizegiving and I think they absolutely loved it. And they were so well behaved as well.

"All of the children without exception produced a piece of artwork – and some of them were absolutely amazing.

"It was nothing to do with computers or screens – you don't need batteries to do it either.

"And I think that was a good thing.

"They've asked if we could do another event for Years 3 and 4.

"This was a lot of hard work but it was totally worth it."
