Proposals would see the foot-way widened on either side of the A456 Manor Way and the creation of a toucan crossing.

A campaign for a safe crossing was launched in January 2013 to allow people and cyclists to access Halesowen Cycling & Athletics Club.

It will allow schools in the area to make use of the activities at the sports ground – as well as ensuring people can cross the road to catch a bus.

The plans, put forward by Dudley Council, are currently out for consultation – with the aim for it to be funded by the Government's Active Travel Fund.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environmental, highways and street services said: "These proposals will allow us to further encourage people to undertake more of their journeys on foot or by bike, with immediate health benefits to them as individuals, but also hopefully helping to take more vehicles off our roads, improving air quality and traffic flow.

"I hope people take the time to take part in the consultation which launched on Monday and runs for four weeks."

The widened foot-ways will run from the new crossing to the junction with Manor Lane – where the current traffic signals will be upgraded, chiefs said.

The measures will also be supported by a reduction in the speed limit along this stretch from 50mph to 40mph in a bid to further improve safety along the route.

Another proposal, also out for consultation, is for a cycle path on the A4123 Burnt Tree to Tipton Road – centred around the future Metro stop.

The funding comes from the Department for Transport's Active Travel Fund which handed the cash to Transport for West Midlands, part of West Midlands Combined Authority.
