Black Country family-run business shortlisted for award

A family-run clothing business which has been operating in the Black Country for more than 130 years has been shortlisted for an award.

Dave Dancer from Dancers clothes shop, in Halesowen, is keeping his fingers crossed after being shortlisted for the Family Business of the Year Award in the Black Country Chamber Awards

Dancers Ltd, based in Peckingham Street, in Halesowen, has been nominated for the Family Business Hero of the Year at the Black Country Chamber Business Heroes Awards.

Dancers has been based in the region since 1884 and the company is now being run by the fifth generation of the Dancer family.

The store sells men's and women's clothing, school uniforms for local schools, haberdashery and hires out men's formal suits.

Dave Dancer, who started working at the store part-time in 2003, as is now assistant manager, said they were delighted with the award shortlist.

Dave, 33, said: "It feels really great to be nominated and it is really nice to get that recognition. It has given us a boost after how this year has been due to Covid.

"We find out in November if we have won.

"This year has been something we have next experienced before. Our wedding suit hire side of the business has dramatically changed, but it has been we have had the school uniform department so we could get back to business with that."

The Family Business Hero of the Year is sponsored by CK Chartered Accountants, and other finalists include In-Comm Training and Business Services, Lawrence Cleaning Limited, Lord Combustion Services Limited and Robinson Brothers Limited.

The winners will be announced at an awards event on Friday, November 13.
