Emergency services were called to the crash on Duncan Edwards Way, near to the Castle Gate Island, just before 1am on Tuesday.

A motorcyclist and his passenger were found seriously injured at the scene.

Henryk Ortyl, 45, who is believed to have been the motorcycle rider, died at the scene.

A 20-year-old man was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham with serious injuries to his arm, where he remains today.

No other vehicle is believed to have been involved.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Unfortunately, nothing could be done to save one of the men and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

West Midlands Police has now launched an investigation and is asking for any witnesses to the fatal crash to come forward.

Sergeant Dean Caswell, from West Midlands Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "I am keen to hear from anyone who witnessed how the motorcycle came to be in a collision and if anyone has any dash cam footage before or after the incident, that would be really helpful too.

“We believe the motorcycle did not come into contact with any other vehicle, but we would like to work out what caused this tragic death.”

Duncan Edwards Way was cleared by lunchtime on Tuesday

Both sides of the carriageway on Duncan Edwards Way were closed for a number of hours to make the scene safe.
