In the Black Country and Staffordshire temperatures dropped to minus 5C in the early hours, while a warning for ice in the area remained this morning.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning for ice until mid-morning as the region recovered from the cold snap.

Met Office meteorologist Ellie Creed said: “It’s been pretty cold overnight and there have been showers in the last 24 hours, so there could well be some icy stretches around.”

The low minus 8.5C was recorded at Altnaharra in Sutherland, while minus 7C was recorded at Aboyne in Aberdeenshire.

For the rest of Thursday in the Black Country and Staffordshire, any early cloud and rain will clear – leaving bright or sunny spells with a maximum temperature of 5C.

An early frost is possible this evening, but becoming milder and cloudier. Patchy rain with spread through the early hours with a minimum temperature of 1C.
