Man dies after being hit by a train at Sandwell and Dudley station

Trains through a Black Country railway station were disrupted this weekend after a man died after being hit by a train.

No trains were stopping at Sandwell and Dudley station, in West Bromwich, this morning following the tragedy.

The man was struck by a train on Saturday evening, shortly after 5.30pm, and social media users said several ambulances were seen at the scene.

A spokesman for British Transport Police confirmed the man was pronounced dead at the scene and they were not treating his death as suspicious.

The man's next of kin have been informed.

In a statement, British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Sandwell and Dudley Railway Station, West Bromwich, on Saturday, after a report that a man had been struck by a train.

"Officers from British Transport Police attended the incident, which was reported to us at 5.42pm.

"Sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is currently being treated as non-suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner. Their next of kin have been informed."

The platforms at Sandwell and Dudley station had remained closed throughout Saturday night and this morning, and were reopened at around 3.30pm today.

A spokesman for West Midlands Railway also confirmed that a person had died following the incident.

They tweeted: "I am sorry to advise that someone lost their life there yesterday, we are working to reopen the platforms as soon as possible."

A 16-seater minibus had been put in place on Sunday morning to ferry passengers turning up to the nearest station. Tickets were also being accepted on the Midland Metro and a number of National Express West Midlands bus routes.

West Midlands Railway and Virgin services were affected for a number of hours.
