Four children and woman seriously injured after car hits tree in Birmingham

Four children have been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a car hit a tree in Birmingham early today.

At 4.45am an ambulance crew, with a patient already on board, came across the crash on Belchers Lane in the Bordesley Green area.

Multiple people were injured and while the crew waited for back up, they began treatment.

An additional five ambulances were sent to the scene, along with four paramedic officers and the MERIT car with a critical care paramedic and doctor on board. The first additional resource was on scene within three minutes.

A boy and a girl were in a critical condition, and two other children both girls, had serious injuries, all four were taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

A woman, who was the driver, was treated for serious injuries and taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

A West Midlands Ambulance spokeswoman said: “When the additional crews arrived, they found a total of five patients, four of which were children.

“Two of the children, a boy and girl, were in a critical condition. Crews acted quickly to treat the patients for serious injuries and get them on blue lights and sirens to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

"The girl travelled with the critical care paramedic on board, whilst the boy was conveyed in a separate ambulance with the doctor continuing treatment on route.

“Two other children, both girls, were treated for serious injuries and conveyed to BCH in separate ambulances on blue lights and sirens.

“The fifth patient, a woman, who was the driver of the car, was treated for potentially serious injuries and conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment.

“The patient from the original ambulance that came across the collision continued with their journey.”

Police have said the road is likely to remain closed for most of the morning.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We are investigating after a car hit a tree on Belchers Lane, Bordesley Green at 4.45am this morning.

"A woman and three children have been taken to hospital where their injuries are described as serious. A fourth child has also been taken to hospital with a fractured collar bone.

"Belchers Lane at the junction of Cotterills Lane is likely to remain closed for most of the morning.
