James Timmons, from Birmingham, began talking to the girl on a bus – despite her telling him her age – on January 30.

He ignored her and instead used her phone to dial his mobile, meaning he had her number stored in his phone.

The 47-year-old began messaging her later that evening about meeting up to have "no strings attached fun".

The victim told him again she was only 15 in a message which officers later found had been deleted from his phone.

Timmons' messages continued until the youngster decided to contact West Midlands Police's public protection unit.

Specialist officers offered her support and launched an investigation – with the man arrested the same day.

Timmons, of Rotton Park Road in Edgbaston, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on May 13 for inciting a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity.

He was jailed for 12 months and placed under a sexual harm prevention order – and put on the sex offenders' register for 10 years.

Dc Nicky Simms, from the public protection unit, said: "We must commend this young girl for her bravery in coming to us and telling us what happened.

"This case does show that even though there was no physical contact a crime was still committed and we will always do all we can to take action and safeguard our youngsters."
