About 40 firefighters were called to the scene in Aston Church Road, Nechells, just before 7.30am this morning.

Smoke from the blaze has been billowing high into the sky and can be seen across the city and beyond.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "We've got seven fire engines at the scene, approximately 40 firefighters.

"The last message we had said it was a severe fire involving 200 tons of scrap metal.

"We've sectioned it off to break the incident down.

"We've got a hydraulic platform and two main water jets."

It is not yet known what caused the fire.
