Woman killed in building fire in Digbeth
A woman died in a fire in a building in Birmingham which is believed to have been started accidentally.
More than 20 firefighters were called to a three-storey building in Bradford Street, in Digbeth, shortly before 9pm on Tuesday night.
Sadly, a woman was confirmed dead at the scene.
Her death is not being treated as suspicious.
A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service say it is believed the fire started accidentally.
Crews from Highgate, Aston, Haymills and Bournbrook were in attendance.
A spokesman from West Midlands Fire Service said: "At 8.52pm on January 28, we responded to 999 calls reporting a fire in a void commercial building in Bradford Street, Digbeth, Birmingham.
"Five fire engines, a hydraulic platform and some 25 firefighters responded, with our first crew arriving in just over four minutes.
"Sadly, the body of a woman was found on the second floor of the three-storey building. This is where the fire occurred, damaging around a fifth of that floor.
"Our investigators are satisfied that the fire started accidentally.
"The building is large, with a complex layout, so firefighters from our Technical Rescue Unit also attended to conduct a thorough search and ensure that no-else was inside.
"We understand that the police were liaising with the city council to get the building boarded up."
A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "We assisted fire, and the death is not being treated as suspicious."
