The victim was at Birmingham International station on October 24, when two men watched her entering her PIN number at the self-service ticket machine.

Another man stood behind her and another kept lookout during the incident between 3.19pm and 3.34pm.

As she made her way to board the 3.19pm train to Birmingham New Street, they attempted to take her purse from her handbag – but failed to do so.

The four men then boarded the same train and as she arrived into New Street, one offered to carry her luggage. It is then believed another took the purse from her slightly open handbag while she was distracted.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "One of the men immediately withdrew cash in Grand Central and proceeded to make purchases and withdrawals throughout the city.

"Within an hour, the group had spent nearly £2,000 and the total figure stands at £3,122.

"Officers believe that the four men shown in these CCTV images may have information which could help them investigate."

Anyone who recognises the men is asked to call British Transport Police on 0800 405040 quoting reference 347 of December 6.

Alternatively, information can be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
