Emergency services were called to TIMET UK in Holford Road, Witton around 2.44am today to reports of an explosion, which was a coolant pipe bursting.

The worker, believed to be in his late 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Group Commander Steve Harris, from West Midlands Fire Service, said: “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, his friends and colleagues following this tragic incident.

“It would appear that the incident involved the fracture of coolant pipes.

"The nature of the material involved meant we had to tackle the fire in specialist suits, using dry power rather than water.

“At one stage we had around 30 firefighters at the scene, but our resources have now been scaled down.

“Our specialist fire investigators will be working closely with West Midlands Police, as well as with the Health and Safety Executive who will be carrying out a full inquiry.”

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “A man has died following an industrial accident at a metal smelting plant in Birmingham.

“Police and other emergency services were called to the incident at Timet UK, on Witton Industrial Estate in Holford Road just before 3am.

“Officers attended the incident following reports a cooling pipe had burst.

“The matter is being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive."
