There was previously no footpath to help walkers to cross the former railway bridge on A34 Green Lane in the Birchills area of the town resulting in people being forced to use the carriageway on the busy commuter linking Bloxwich to Walsall town centre.
The Walsall Council scheme has seen the eastern side of the bridge widened to create a new pedestrian footpath to provide safer access for workers at utility insurance company Homeserve and other businesses without crossing the carriageway near the traffic light junction between Cable Drive and Stephenson Avenue.
Council associate leader Councillor Adrian Andrew said: “This is one of numerous active travel improvements that have been, or will be delivered by the Town Deal.
"Engagement with local businesses in the area showed that the lack of safe pedestrian access is a barrier for local employees, so we hope that widening the bridge to create a new footpath will help improve access for people that work in the area.
