Crews were on the scene from 10.35pm for more than 12 hours, after receiving up to 50 calls about the incident at a unit in Alma Crescent in Duddeston.

Fire investigation officers determined that the blaze started accidentally, due to a mix of chemicals culminating in a chemical reaction.

The unit had a number of discarded fridges on site, as well as plastic items, paint aerosols, and acid.

Firefighters will be revisiting the site this afternoon to make sure it is safe, and have been in talks with the Environment Agency.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service praised crew members for their 'fantastic assertive firefighting' that enabled the team to get the blaze under control.

More than 15 fire engines and supporting vehicles went out to the scene on the night.

Residents were warned to keep their windows closed due to large volumes of smoke.
