The commemoration on Tuesday – named the National Day of Reflection – was set-up by end-of-life charity Marie Curie to give the nation a moment to reflect a year on.

People were asked to stand on their doorsteps at 8pm with phones, candles or torches to signify a “beacon of remembrance” across the country.

St Peter’s Church, in the city centre, was lit up yellow, while a beam was shone into the sky at around 8pm on Tuesday.
