Councillor Johnny McMahon, cabinet member for health, care and wellbeing, told Staffordshire County Council's cabinet on Wednesday that people need to be on their guard.

He said: "We know that the vaccine prevents people from becoming seriously ill and hospitalised but this is only the first dose.

"We don't know if as a result of having the vaccine you are no longer contagious, we don't know if the vaccine prevents that.

"We have to keep on our guard.

"If we do go out regularly because of work or shopping for the household we strongly advise you to get a lateral flow test on a regular basis."
