A walk-through coronavirus testing centre has opened in the heart of Walsall as part of a bid to curb the virus’s spread, as it emerged another site is to remain open for a further two weeks.

The new facility, at Walsall Town Hall, opened yesterday as positive cases across the borough continue to fall – but with people still urged to be vigilant.

Coronavirus figures, recorded in the seven days to August 29, show 25 cases and a rate of 8.8 per 100,000 in the borough – down from 40 cases and 14 per 100,000 the previous week.

Government bosses say the move will allow people without a car to get tested in the borough.

More Covid-19 coverage:

Baroness Dido Harding, interim executive chair of the National Institute for Health Protection, said: “Local sites will mean anyone who has symptoms can get a free test quickly.”

It comes as health chiefs in the borough announced the mobile testing unit in Willenhall will continue for another two weeks. The facility, at the Wakes Ground car and lorry park, will now run until September 14.

The mobile unit will then move across Willenhall and the Walsall borough depending on where it is most needed.

Tests should be booked at nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119.
