Reduced tram service as lockdown goes on

Trams across the West Midlands will be reducing their running times to every 12 minutes – as fewer people use the service during the coronavirus lockdown.

Usually trams on West Midlands Metro run every six to seven minutes during the day, and then every 15 minutes in the evening and on Sunday.

But now, from Monday to Saturday, trams will operate every 15 minutes from the start of services until 6.30am and then every 12 minutes until 8pm. From 8pm until the service ends they will operate every 15 minutes. There will be no change to the usual Sunday timetable.

As members of the public follow the latest government instructions to avoiding non-essential travel, the number of people using the region’s tram network has reduced, so West Midlands Metro is adjusting its timetable to meet the current needs of customers.

Carl Williams, director of operations, said: "While fewer people are travelling with us, we’ve also recognised the need to maintain a regular, robust service for key workers and those who still need to travel for medical reasons, to support a vulnerable person, or for the collection of essential supplies."
