Mohammed Daniyal, from Walsall, was diagnosed with Burkitt Leukaemia just weeks before his 10th birthday early last year.

His older sister, Sana Mahmood, said the youngster was in and out of hospital for weeks with a temperature and he was only diagnosed when he could no longer walk and was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Sana, a 23-year-old student, said: "In April last year he was taken to hospital because he had a temperature that just wouldn't go away.

"He kept getting discharged and it got to the point where he couldn't walk and was in pain all the time.

"He was transferred to Birmingham Children's Hospital and on the same day we found out it was leukaemia and they put in a Hickman line to start chemo.

"He had chemo in his veins and also in a shot in his spine because they found out the cancer was in his spine too.

"I want people to know that it's not that rare and it does happen. When you're sat in a hospital full of children with cancer it doesn't feel rare at all.

"He was really brave, for the first month we didn't tell him it was cancer, we just said he had bad cells, but we told him later on and he was really brave.

"He was always smiling and cheeking the nurses, he loved his time with them."

Sana said the Whitehall Junior Community School pupil was told he was in remission in October and rang the end of treatment bell.

Sana, of Fullbrook, said: "In October we were told he was in remission and he rang the end of treatment bell.

"We were all in tears, including the nurses. They saw what he was like at first when he couldn't walk and then he was able to walk up to he bell and ring it.

"He has to go back every six weeks for a check-up in case he has a relapse.

"We had him home for Christmas which was great."
