Stafford's County Hospital: Spring drop in A&E waiting times

A&E performance at County Hospital has reached its highest levels since September as it appears to have recovered from the traditionally busy winter period.

According to the latest figures in March 88 per cent of people were dealt with in the required four hours.

It had slumped as low as less the 80 per cent in January meaning one in five patients were waiting longer than the should have.

Meanwhile Royal Stoke, in Newcastle-under-Lyme which is run by the same trust, is showing its own signs of improvement but is still performing well below the required national benchmark of 95 per cent against the four hour standard.

In March they rose to 78 per cent having being as low as 72 per cent in January.

As a result University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) is operating at 80 per cent overall.

A performance report said: "UHNM did not achieve the 4-hour emergency access standard for March 2017 delivering 80.4 per cent vs the standard of 95 per cent or better, there was an improvement in the performance at Royal Stoke site, increasing by 1.7 per cent between February and March 2017.

"In addition County Hospital also saw an improvement of 5.6per cent; giving an overall increase of 1.9 per cent for UHNM.

"This was achieved despite an increase in non-elective admissions across the organisation increased."
