Above the knee, or below the knee? That is the question

The dowdy and the brave - the perils of changing skirt lengths in the late 1950s.

We're talking 1950s fashions here. And specifically talking about the summer of 1959, when our four local models demonstrated a selection of skirt lengths of varying fashionability.

For a demonstration of how quickly the fashions could change we're also serving up for comparison a picture close to home, taken in the reception area of the Express & Star's old offices in Queen Street, Wolverhampton, where some earlier skirt fashions were on show.

We don't have the date, but think it's mid-1950s, when that fuller skirt would really have been on trend among fashionable young women. In any event, there's a picture of Queen Elizabeth on the counter extreme right, and she ascended to the throne in 1952.

Judging by the standards of the time, which one of the skirts worn by our 1959 foursome do you think is just right for "average legs."? Which looks "faintly ridiculous."? Which is 18 months out of date and leaves the wearer feeling dowdy? And lastly, can you spot the one which is just the right length?
