A temporary traveller's site in Willenhall which was launched in April is no longer operational - as it was only set up for a funeral.

Walsall Council leader Mike Bird said the former site, on Wakes Car Park, off Walsall Street, only housed three caravans.

He said those caravans are currently occupying land on White Horse Road, Brownhills, on the border with South Staffordshire District Council.

The council is currently trying to get a court order to move the travellers on.

Councillor Bird told the Express & Star: "The site [on Wakes Car Park] was only made live as we were expecting a funeral. The funeral took place that week [when the site was launched].

"We were expecting quite a number at the funeral that particular week. But the travellers that came didn't come in caravans but came in cars to Willenhall. They disappeared and left."

On the encampment in Brownhills, he said: "When they were in Willenhall, the police asked them to move. Now they are in Brownhills.

"A court order is being sought. The land belongs to South Staffs which leases it to Walsall."
