West Midlands Police officer taken to hospital after Aston Expressway crash

[gallery] A police officer was taken to hospital after a crash today after being called to a man running along a major route into Birmingham .

The Aston Expressway between Park Circus and Dartmouth Circus was closed following the crash involving a police vehicle and another car at about 5am.

Police had been called to reports of a man running on the Expressway between Lancaster Circus and Dartmouth Circus.

As officers tried to detain the man, a Seat Ibiza collided with the police car at the scene.

A police officer from the car was taken to hospital and released after examination.

The Seat driver was left with minor injuries and was also taken to hospital for treatment.

The man, who was running along the carriageway, was detained by officers and is helping them with their investigation.

Road closures were in place whilst an investigation was carried out at the scene and the Expressway was re-opened just after 8am.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the force's Collision Investigation Unit on 101.

Officers initially said their colleague had been seriously injured, but later clarified that he had not been hurt.
