The Vauxhall Astra became embedded in the side of the detached property, which has been converted into flats, in Wayside Walk, Walsall at about 1.20am.

A woman in her 30s and her child were woken by the smash and were led to safety by firefighters, while a man was also evacuated from the upstairs flat.

The damage done to the house

A huge hole and crack was left in the wall and structural engineers have been drafted in to see if the house is still safe.

The driver of the car, a man in his late 30s, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Watch Commander Ian Gough, of Walsall Fire Station, said: "Bricks and breeze blocks were strewn across the lounge and the TV and furniture had been thrown across the room.

"It did a lot of damage. The woman was in severe shock."

Police say they are investigating and urged anyone with information to call 101.
