The car narrowly missed tumbling over the edge onto a railway line beneath.

Two adults and two children had already got out of the car when emergency services arrived at 12.45am.

The vehicle had ended up on its side on the northbound carriageway between junctions 14 at Stafford and 15 for Stoke.

An eight year-old girl with back pain was strapped to a spinal board. She and her family were taken to the University Hospital North Staffordshire.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Claire Brown said: ""Given the location of the incident and the way in which the car had landed, it was remarkable that no one had suffered more serious or even fatal injuries."
