Edgar Stammers Primary Academy, in Harden Road, was given the lowest possible rating of ‘inadequate’ in a damning report published in 2016.

But, following a two-day inspection in March, Ofsted said the school – which has 335 pupils on its roll – has shown standards in many areas are rising.

Inspectors confirmed the school has been taken out of special measures and upgraded its overall rating to ‘requires improvement’.

Caroline Jobling, executive head teacher, said she was delighted that efforts of staff to bring about improvements had been recognised but added more more needed to be done.

The report did highlight aspects which the school needs to focus on to improve including ensuring the quality of teaching was consistent across key stages 1 and 2, boost reading standards, provide more opportunities for children to write at length and tackle the ‘below average’ attendance.

But inspectors praised the good leadership and governance which they said was improving the school.

Safeguarding was also commended with the school was labelled “inclusive and caring” with staff committed to pupils’ development, well-being and safety.

They also said standards in attainment were rising, children in early years were receiving a good start to their education and provision for pupils with special educational needs was good.
