Birmingham-born DJ Gemma Cairney, who presents advice show The Surgery, brought her big yellow bus to Wolverhampton Grammar School to speak to students and discuss Open: A Toolkit for How Magic and Messed Up Life Can Be.

Zoe Rowley, head librarian at the grammar, said Gemma's visit was a life-changing experience for the students.

She said: "She made them believe they can do something with their life and if they want something to change then they have the power to do it themselves.

"She is certainly a very empowering woman."

The 31 year old took part in a question and answer session with around 300 pupils from schools across the West Midlands.

Students were also invited to record podcasts with Gemma and board her bus, which had an onboard library, artificial grass pitch and hula hoops.

Miss Rowley said the visit had helped the children talk about what mattered to them.

She added: "A lot of children feel hounded on social media and about what they post.

"Gemma told them they should feel free to express their opinion without caring what other people think.

"She helped them embrace themselves and feel comfortable with who they are."

The DJ's book is a guide to help young people navigate love, friendships, health and other aspects of growing up.

In a blog post, Gemma explained she was inspired to write her book after her mother found an article she had written aged nine about racist bullying she experienced at an activities camp.
