Jury finds Wolverhampton man guilty of deliberately mounting pavement and running over relative

A Wolverhampton man suffered a brain injury after he was deliberately struck by a car driven by a relative he had fallen out with.

On Wednesday(4) former trader Kulwant Dehal, aged 51, was found guilty of dangerous driving and wounding by the jury in an unanimous verdict after a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

The jury heard that the victim Gurpreet Dehal suffered a brain injury when he was hit by Dehal while walking with his wife, in Parkfield Road, Parkfield, on April 5, 2021. 

The couple were on the pavement when the defendant's car swerved off the carriageway. The incident was captured on CCTV and the footage was played in court.

The defendant, of Edam Road, Goldthorn Park, claimed that he had intended to pulling over to speak to the victim as he had not seen him for about six months when the collision happened. But the prosecution said Dehal had "appeared unbothered" by what happened in the immediate aftermath.

Judge Richard Grimshaw said he will be sentenced on July 4.
