Arrest after crash during police chase

A man has been arrested after a driver fleeing police crashed into another car in Tipton.

Officers spotted a BMW at about 4.40pm yesterday which had previously failed to stop for police.

It failed to stop for officers near Great Bridge island then crashed with another car in New Road.

Two men were arrested after a foot chase, the passenger was released but a 23-year-old from Smethwick was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police and dangerous driving.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We’ve arrested a man on suspicion of dangerous driving after a car which made off from us crashed into another vehicle yesterday.

"Traffic officers spotted the BMW at around 4.40pm and intelligence checks revealed it had previously failed to stop for police.

"It was followed for a few minutes before failing to stop for officers near Great Bridge island. Moments later it collided with another car in New Road and two men arrested following a foot chase.

"One man, the passenger, was later released but a 23-year-old man from Smethwick arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police and dangerous driving has been released under investigation.

"The driver of the other car was not injured."

Jamie Arrowsmith, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "We were called to reports of a two-car road traffic collision on New Road, near to St Lukes Centre, at 4.46pm. One ambulance attended the scene.

"We treated two patients, both men, for injuries not believed to be serious before the were both taken to Sandwell Hospital on the same ambulance."
