Danielle Mather, 33, died in hospital on Friday after being found in cardiac arrest at a property in Stoke-on-Trent the day before.
She was found after police were called to reports of a woman being in cardiac arrest at the building in South Walk, Meir, at midday on Thursday.
A 34-year-old suspect, from Tipton, was arrested in Stoke the same day. It is now yet known if he was arrested at the scene.
Ms Mather's body was formally identified on Tuesday and her family have now paid tribute to her.
The statement said: "Danielle was a kind, outgoing and loving person who listened to anybody who needed the time.
"She had travelled various parts of the world and later settled down in Stoke-on-Trent after studying at university.
"She will be sorely missed by family and friends and leaves a huge hole in our lives."
A post-mortem examination has taken place but Staffordshire Police said further tests are required to establish the cause of death.
The murder suspect has been released on conditional bail while inquiries continue.
