Mark Masefield, of George Road, Stockland Green, Birmingham, was charged last week by West Midlands Police officers investigating the death of Marie Gladders.

A judge at Birmingham Crown Court remanded Masefield in custody on Tuesday, ordering the 52-year-old to reappear for a plea hearing on December 9.

A court spokesman said a provisional trial date has also been fixed for May 24 next year.

Ms Gladders, from Chelmsley Wood, Birmingham, was pronounced dead after reports of a stabbing in George Road last Thursday.

The victim's family issued a statement on Monday saying they were "beyond devastated".

Her family said: "We are beyond devastated and heartbroken over the tragic loss of our beautiful mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, partner and friend.

"To lose her in such a cruel way is deeply saddening, and we pray that justice is served for her."
