The girl, who asked to remain anonymous, was sat in her English literature class at City of Wolverhampton College's in Paget Road when she heard a loud bang on Monday.

Her teacher initially said the noise was most likely a car but then a bullet pierced the classrooms window and hit the wall at the back, leaving plaster on the floor.

She said: "It was a normal lesson, then it was about 2.40pm and we heard two big bangs and my teacher said she thought it was a car stalling but then it shot through the window and we were all told to go into the corner.

"Luckily it went straight through the middle of the room and hit the pillar closest to the wall.

"On the floor was piece of plaster and a little metal capsule, it was quite scary.

"We were shocked because we thought it was a car, it was just like something banging, then the teacher told us to move into a corner.

"It shot a clean hole through the glass, it was just one that went into the classroom.

"Some people were calm but about two girls were crying and everybody was in shock really.

More on this story:

"The teacher was quite shocked obviously and she called security and they went outside and checked if there was anything by the window.

"They checked I think to see if there was anybody still out there but then we were sent home."

Parents waiting to collect their children from nearby St Jude's Primary School also heard gunshots.

Chief Inspector Hasson Shigdar said it is not believed that anybody at the college was targeted during the attack, however no arrests have been made and it is not known where the shots was fired.

"We are doing all that we can to trace those responsible and I would ask anyone with information to contact us urgently," he said.

The student added: "It didn't hit me until after then I was quite shook up about it.

"I went home and had a call saying I could go back in on Tuesday.

"We're moving classrooms."
