Three men, aged 36, 32 and 28, were arrested in Smiths Wood, Solihull, after being tracked down by the police helicopter on Monday.

Officers had been pursuing the van after being called to a burglary at Raleigh Industrial Estate in Camps Lane, Handsworth Wood, at around 12.45am.

Officers disturbed the burglars who fled the estate in the stolen Transit van.

They drove through locked gates, causing a police dog handler to jump out of the way injuring her wrist.

The van went on to crash with parked cars as well as another motorist who was not seriously injured before being abandoned on the hard shoulder of the M42.

All three men were arrested on suspicion of burglary, dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle and assault and have been released under investigation.
