Chief Supt Phil Dolby was taken to hospital on Sunday after showing coronavirus symptoms for a week, and on Tuesday colleagues said he was in intensive care on a ventilator.

On Thursday a spokesman for the force confirmed his condition had not changed but was unable to say whether his Covid-19 test results have come back as positive.

Firearms Operations Unit tweeted this evening saying Chief Supt Dolby has stabilised and his family are sending their thanks for the "kind messages".

The tweet says: "Update on Phil Dolby. He’s still on a ventilator and in the ITU.

"He has stabilised which is a huge positive and the NHS staff are simply awesome.

"His family are aware of all your kind messages and send their sincere thanks."

Chief Supt Dolby has been on the force for more than two decades and served as a Detective Chief Inspector based in Dudley for two years until 2016, when he became temporary superintendent.

He was appointed Head of Criminal Justice Services in February this year.

It comes as police across the region start to implement the new Government restrictions regarding the coronavirus lockdown.

At least three people have been charged with flouting the new laws including a man who allegedly broke into Dudley Zoo and helped himself to drinks from the bar.
