Nathaniel Matthews, aged 37, struck Baljit Kaur with his blue Volkswagen Golf car after she had stepped off a bus in Edgbaston in December 2018.

Mrs Kaur had been travelling on a bus along Bristol Road at about 3.35pm – she got off and started to cross the road.

But a Volkswagen Golf, which had been travelling behind the bus, overtook it at speed, just as Mrs Kaur also stepped into the road.

She was struck by Matthews' car and he drove off.

Nothing could be done to save the 65-year-old grandmother's life, said West Midlands Police.

About five minutes later, security employee Matthews called police and pretended that his car had been carjacked on Umberslade Road, near to Kings Heath High Street.

His car was found at about 4pm that day by officers in Summer Road and inquiries, along with CCTV checks, led investigators to Matthews.

He was found just a few hundred yards away from where the car had been left and arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

When taken into custody, his phone was examined showing his movements – and providing he had lied.

At the time of her death, Mrs Kaur's family released a statement in tribute to her, saying: "On the December 22, 2018, at approximately 3.25pm, our family lost my beloved wife Baljit Kaur who was a devoted mother, grandmother and sister.

“We ask for our time to grieve privately and thank all well-wishers and those who helped at the scene."

At Birmingham Crown Court on January 24, Matthews, of Tile Cross Road, in Birmingham, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice. He will be sentenced on February 20.
