The Ford Fiesta sped off from officers in the Brownhills area at around 2am on Saturday morning.

Shortly afterwards, it collided with a lamppost in Lindon Road and the driver ran off down Harley Close.

Police caught up with him after he tried to jump over a fence. He was found to be twice over the drink drive limit.

The 28-year-old from Walsall was arrested on suspicion of drinking driving, drugs possession and car theft.

A quantity of drugs were found in the car – which turned out to have been stolen from the Bilston area in November last year.

A spokesman from West Midlands Police said: "A Ford Fiesta made off from officers at 2am today [Saturday] in the Brownhills area but collided with a lamppost in Lindon Road a short time later.

"The driver ran away into Harley Close but was quickly caught by officers as he tried jumping over a fence.

"The car was found to be running on cloned plates – checks confirmed it had been stolen in November from Bilston.

"A quantity of what's believed to be Class A and B drugs were also recovered.

"A 28-year-old man, from the Delves area of Walsall, remains in police custody on suspicion of drink driving, drugs possession, and car theft."
