Armed police were sent to the shopping centre in Birmingham after violence broke out while the area was packed with Christmas shoppers on Wednesday afternoon.

A 17-year-old man seriously injured his hand while an 18-year-old man was left with a slash wound to his head and a broken ankle.

Detectives have now released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to in connection with the violence.

Det Insp Lauren Glass, from West Midlands Police CID, said: “We’re working hard to establish the circumstances of what happened yesterday afternoon.

“The two men received nasty injuries in a busy shopping centre, a week before Christmas; there is no place for this level of violence within the city.

“I urge anyone with any information who hasn’t already contacted us to get in touch."

There will be a continued police presence within the Bullring over the weekend to offer reassurance to shoppers, a force spokesman added.

Both injured teenagers were taken to hospital after police and paramedics were called to reports of two people being injured near the back entrance to Selfridges at 3.30pm on Wednesday.

Detectives believe it was an isolated incident.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police via www.west-midlands.police.uk between 8am and midnight or by calling 101 anytime, quoting crime number 20BW/298820C/19.
