Temesgen Desta carried out the sex attack at a Birmingham apartment less than 24 hours after similarly trying to strangle and rape a woman in Liverpool.

West Midlands Police launched a manhunt for Desta after he forced his way into a flat in Birmingham city centre and hit a woman, causing her to fall, just after midnight on March 15 this year.

He raped the 32-year-old woman before tying her to a chair with a cable and blocking the bedroom door as he fled from the address.

Desta was also being sought by Merseyside Police following an attempted sexual assault of a 54-year-old woman on a beach in Crosby around 3pm the previous day. She was left with marks around her neck after he grabbed her throat.

Desta was traced to Scotland after being recognised by ports officers and arrested on March 21.

The 32-year-old, of no fixed address, was found guilty by a jury of rape, intent to commit rape and two counts of false imprisonment following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court in September.

Desta was jailed today for life, to serve a minimum of 10 years.
