The police community support officer (PCSO) was on patrol when spotted a crash involving a car and a moped on John Harper Street, in Willenhall, just after noon on Thursday.

The moped rider made off from the scene but was later detained – and alleged to have made threats to stab PCSO Iain Digget.

A member of the public helped the officer – and now police are trying to trace them to say thank you.

The 17-year-old boy has now been arrested.

A spokesman from West Midlands Police said: "PCSO Iain Digget gave chase and detained him in nearby Walsall Street, but the teenager is then alleged to have made threats to stab him.

"A member of the public rushed over to help until back-up arrived.

"The investigation is on-going, and the Darlaston Police team are currently trying to trace the member of the public to thank them."

Anyone who has any further information about the incident, or knows the member of public who helped, is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101 quoting incident number 20WS/239774T/19.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
