A cyclist has died after a hit-and-run in Birmingham yesterday.

David Perkins

Police were called to the junction of Osler Street and Reservoir Road in Edgbaston shortly before 11am to reports of a collision between a car and a bicycle.

The cyclist, 65-year-old David Perkins, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital where he later died.

Today, David’s family paid an emotional tribute to him: “Yesterday we lost an amazing father, partner and grandfather. His sudden death and the circumstances in which he was taken from us make it impossible to comprehend at this time.

“He was truly the most kind and loving person and his life was taken away from this world far too soon. He will be terribly missed by everyone who knew him; we don’t know how we can be without him.

“We beg of anyone who may have seen or witnessed what happened to please contact the police, anything you saw could be helpful so please, please come forward.”

The driver of the blue Seat Ibiza failed to stop at the scene, but the car was later recovered on Villa Street, Birmingham.

A 23-year-old man handed himself in to police and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released while enquiries continue.

Detective Sergeant Alan Hands from the collision investigation unit, said: “We are urgently appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

“I am aware of there being witnesses to this collision who did not remain at the scene prior to police arrival and would like to hear from them. Any information, no matter how small, may help our investigation.

“We are also appealing to anyone with dashcam footage to get in touch.”
