Adeel Prince Khalid, 21, was driving his Vauxhall Astra along the A34 Liverpool Road in Newcastle-under-Lyme on March 4 2018 at 4.45am when it crashed with the driver’s side of a Vauxhall Corsa that had emerged from the junction of Victoria Street.

An investigation found that Khalid was driving up to 71mph – 30mph above the limit – moments immediately before the crash.

A 21-year-old woman from Featherstone suffered broken bones, internal injuries and a serious head injury.

Three passengers in Khalid’s car suffered minor injuries.

Khalid, of High Barn Close, Rochdale, was sentenced today at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Khalid was sentenced to two years in prison and disqualified from driving for three years.

PC Ann Waterhouse, from Staffordshire and West Midlands Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “The woman is still suffering from the effects of the collision 15 months on, and although she continues to recover, it's been a difficult time for her and her family.

“Adeel’s driving that morning was dangerous as he was travelling 30mph over the speed limit and couldn’t stop in time to avoid a collision.

“I would urge motorists to observe the speed limits, regardless of the time of day.”
