Police are investigating after a woman in her early 80s had £500 stolen in a distraction theft.

The woman was shopping in Home Bargains in Dudley town centre when she was surrounded by three women.

One woman distracted her while another took her handbag, which held her cash and bank cards, from her shopping trolley.

The incident took place sometime between 1pm and 2pm on Wednesday.

Mark Tranter, who is the husband of the woman's niece, said: "It is shocking what has happened. She is an elderly relative. Obviously she is quite upset by what happened.

"She asked the store staff later why isn't there signs on the store telling shoppers to be aware."

The store is located in the Churchill Precinct shopping centre.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "The woman was shopping in a store when a group of three women surrounded her. One of the women distracted her while another woman took her handbag, which held cash and bank cards, from her shopping trolley.
