Cannock Chase is being plagued by forest fires as two have scorched the woodland in less than 24 hours.

One acre of woodland was decimated by the blaze yesterday evening after a deliberate attack.

Three crews, from Cannock, Rugeley and Stafford attended the fire near the A513 for Milford at 6pm.

A crew of 15 firefighters tackled the blaze with hose reel jets.

Staffordshire Fire Service spokeswoman Lauren Jeal said: "There were several seats of fire all of which are believed to be deliberate ignition. The area affected is believed to be approximately one acre."

Around 20 hours later, another crew was tackling a grass fire nearby to the A513 for Shugborough.

The crew from Stafford, with five firefighters, used backpacks and beaters to put out the fire, which affected ground that stretched 100 metres by 25 metres.

Staffordshire Fire Service spokeswoman Lauren Jeal added: "We were called at 12.02pm to a grass fire near on the A513 near Shugborough.

"One crew from Stafford attended, and the cause is believed to be accidental.

"They left the scene by 2.06pm."
