Emergency services rushed to the scene of the crash involving a car and off-road motorbike in Garratt Street around 12.30pm on Tuesday.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said the rider of the bike suffered serious injuries in the hit-and-run collision and was taken to hospital.

The road, at its junction with Clive Street, was cordoned off by police for around six hours into the early evening.

A spokesman from West Midlands Police said: "It is believed a man on an off-road motorbike collided with a Honda Civic, which was then driven away from the scene.

"The rider of the bike has suffered serious injuries and been taken to hospital.

"We are appealing for anyone with any information to contact us."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman added: "We treated a man who had been riding a motor cycle who was reported to have been involved in a collision with a car

"He was treated for a number of potentially serious injuries at the scene before being taken on blue lights to the major trauma centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The critical care paramedic and doctor travelled with the ambulance crew."

An ambulance and the Midlands Air Ambulance critical care car attended the scene.

Mohammed Shazad, 37, who lives nearby and was one of the first on the scene, said: "We heard it first, it was the sound of the bike being dragged along the concrete and the man was being dragged down the road.

"He was getting upset and frustrated but I was just keeping him awake.

“The ambulance was quick to get here but stayed for around an hour and the air ambulance car turned up too.

“It’s a shock, nothing like this has happened around here.

“I was working from home today so it was lucky I was here to help, but I do feel bad for the man.”
