The blade was seized by officers searching supporters outside Villa Park before the game against Ipswich on Saturday.

It was one of two arrests made during the game, which Villa won 2-1. The fan found with the knife, which had a 14cm blade, was also arrested on suspicion of dealing drugs.

Aston Villa West Midlands Police said on Twitter: "Disappointed to say two home arrests, one for dealing drugs and possession of a bladed article and one for assault (on) police."

Police posted a picture of the knife and said: "The only place inside a stadium an article like this should be found is the kitchen area of corporate hospitality!"
